The Mississippi native’s coverage of Hurricane Katrina was exceptional and led her to begin GMA Gets It Done, a year-long initiative to rebuild her hometown of Pass Christian. Unlike many of her peers, she makes it a habit to follow-up on her stories as she did with the devastation of the Gulf Coast, Persian Gulf War, the controversial gentrification of Harlem and the great impact of the World Trade Center on one town. She’s traveled with the former President Clinton to cover the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS on some regions of Africa.
The former basketball player got her start in sports journalism and has contributed to ESPN. She started a scholarship for aspiring sports journalists several years ago.
She’s the author of From the Heart: Seven Rules to Live By.
She is currently battling breast cancer and has chronicled her treatment on GMA and online, inspiring the many Americans battling cancer.
